EUROPEAN UNION FILM FESTIVAL 2003
VISTA 12 Huaykaew Tel (053) 404 374, 404 384
Film freaks in the North will be delighted to
hear that the 13th European Film Festival in Chiang Mai
will officially open on 5th June, with a showing of the
award-winning film from Greece, Peppermint.
With more films from more countries than have
been shown at any of the previous EU festivals, apart from
the single screening on the opening day, and the last
three days, four or five different films will be on offer at
the Sibsong Huay Kaew cinema venue daily, from 12
midday to 7.30 p.m.
Tickets for the showings in Chiang Mai will be
available at the box office at B.50.
Most of the selected films are award winning,
and among them the German Nirgendwo in Afrika
(Nowhere in Africa) and the Slovakian fairy tale
Perinbaba (Lady Winter) are likely to be outstanding.
All screenings will be in the original language
with English subtitles.
Most freaks will feel that if the EU is trying to
curry favour, it's going about it the right way.
ALLIANCE FRANCAISE CHIANG MAI JUNE 2003 film programme
All films are shown on Tuesdays at 4.30 p.m.
and Fridays at 8 p.m. except on holidays.
Tuesday, June 3 - Friday, June 6: LES GRANDES MANOEUVRES (1955)
by Rene Clair with Gérard Philipe o Michèle Morgan o Brigitte Bardot o Jean Desailly o 107mn
René Clair's 1955 classic is set in a small provincial garnison town at the end of the 19th century when the only activity for the bored officers was to win the hearts of the prettiest ladies in town. Admirably played by Gérard Philipe, Michèle Morgan, Jean Desailly and the young Brigitte Bardot.
Tuesday, June 10 - Friday, June 13 : L'ATALANTE (1934)
by Jean Vigo with Michel Simon o Dita Parlo o Jean Dasté o B&W o 88 mn
When Juliette marries Jean, she comes to live on his ship, on board of which are, besides the two of them, only a cabin boy and the strange old second mate Père Jules. Soon bored by life on the river, she slips off to see the nightlife when they come to Paris. Angered by this, Jean sets off, leaving Juliette behind. Overcome by grief and longing for his wife, Jean falls into a depression and Père Jules goes and tries to find Juliette…
Tuesday, June 17 - Friday, June 20: PETIT À PETIT (1971)
by Jean Rouch with Damouré Zika o Lam Ibrahima Dia o Safi Faye o Ariane Bruneton o 96 mn
"Little by Little" tells with humour the tribulations of so-called Nigerois businessmen who attempt to live in the Parisian fashion. Their anthropological survey of Frenchmen in the streets of Paris is hilarious.
Tuesday, June 24 - Friday, June 27: DOUCE (1943)
by Claude Autant-Lara with Odette Joyeux o Madelaine Robinson o Roger Pigaut o Marguerite Moréno o B&W o 104 mn
In 1943 France, it's not easy to talk about the present. Autant-Lara's film brings us into a past laced with sulfuric acid. The Bonafé mansion is a snake pit where the world of masters and underlings is in constant opposition. Sweet young Douce, who dreams of happiness at any cost, is squashed by the mechanisms of an unpitying world…
