Director Wolfgang Becker takes us back to the year 1989, when the Berlin Wall was still intact. A young man is arrested for his protest against the East German regime. His mother watches in distress and falls into an 8-month long coma, during which time the wall comes down and Germany re-unites. The man is released and he watches over his mother, protecting her from any excitement at all costs. As she comes round the young man is faced with the predicament of convincing her that East Germany is still alive and well in their own flat. But how long can the charade last?
