Gourmet Visits

SUBWAY

I have the habit of always hunting for good new places to eat. That's why I felt it compulsory to visit Subway, although, I must admit, I've never though of sandwiches as a real food. I heard about it from my friends studying abroad - that it's a popular franchise sandwich shop in many countries. Now here in Chiang Mai we can find the ninth Subway in Thailand!

.gifSo there I was, at 10.15, in Subway shop in Chiang Mai Pavilion on Chang Klan Road near the Night Bazaar. I looked at the menu and saw a variety of freshly baked gourmet breads on the list (White Italian, Wheat, Parmesan Oregano, Italian Herb, Honey Oats and Hearty Italian). It seemed that I would have a hard time choosing between White Italian and Parmesan Oregano, and between their five different sauces (Southwest, Dijon Horseradish, Honey Mustard and Red Wine Vinaigrette), as also between ‘6 inch' and ‘Footlong' bread.

.gifFinally I just closed my eyes and pointed at the brochure. (Plenty of waiters and waitresses in Chiang Mai have seen me doing this before. It's my habit when everything looks yummy.) There! I got ‘Subway Melt', 'a first class blend of sliced chicken, ham, crispy bacon and melted cheese' with Dijon Horseradish. At the moment of the first bite, you know, when my tongue felt the freshness of the vegetables, crispy bacon and soft bread, I started planning my next visit.

.gifHere, as in Subway shops all over the world, they really are strict about freshness, cleanliness and safety. Breads, custom-made in Bangkok by Subway's formula, are baked fresh every day. Other materials like meats and cheeses are of high quality, many of which are imported from the United States, Australia or Singapore. Fresh vegetables, however, are local products from organic farms of the Royal Project around Chiang Mai, while pickles are from Maesai in Chiang Rai. Tuna, to my surprise, is a product of Thailand, and is not only specific to Thai branches of Subway but also at all other Subways anywhere in the world! All of these efforts to bring only quality ingredients are meant to maintain the Subway standard and palatable signature you can feel in the mouth, no matter where you go.

.gifFor party freaks, Subway also boasts a catering service that can surely turn your common annual event into a very special one. Imagine you order their ‘Giant Subs & Platters' with the sandwich as long as your height or Tha Phae road, and put it around your house, or from downstairs to upstairs, or any other fun ideas you can think of. But don't try the length of the railway from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for you might say ‘No' to sandwiches for the rest of your life.

.gifOn top of everything, what I appreciated most was freshness. It really made a difference. And of course, as we all know, fresh nutritious foods equal better health. A man ordering his sandwiches after me said it best when he said, “This is no junk food!”

.gifWhat I like about hunting for new restaurants is that I always discover something new. This time I discovered the reason why before I didn't like sandwiches. It was because until now, I've never had a really good one!
