Street-wise! That seems to be this month's theme, the long and winding
roads of My Chiangmai.
Here in the city, most road users continue to be punished weekly by
the beaurocrats' blind adherence to 'Walking Street', increasingly deserted
by it's small band of enthusiasts as this photo taken on a recent sunny
Sunday shows.
Grid-locked drivers east and west, tax paying Thapae Road traders -
and those on 3 other affected main streets - have had quite enough and
it's high time that this failed experiment was binned, prior to far deeper
research and thought.
What can you do with buses that you can't do with trams, trolleys and
trains? Divert them, that's what! We don't like 'Walking Street', but if
ever and wherever it settles down, buses can avoid it! Another powerful
reason for our Powers That Be to react positively to the Lord Mayor's push
for school buses and look at the bigger picture. Smooth, quiet, clean,
safe, efficient, resident and tourist friendly, buses WILL come to Chiangmai
- so why not sooner rather than later? The only second city in the world
with no buses and no taxis! What an accolade!!
JUST LIKE THE REAL THING?
Almost! The Spitfire Mk V111 in RAAF livery (no red to avoid confusion with the enemy by ground gunners), arguably the best looking piston-engined plane ever! Framed in dark Thai timber, each piece is numbered and only 1000 pieces
will ever be produced. Made by Thai craftsmen with care.
Can anyone tell me why the odd new scaffolding towers have been inflicted
upon us? U-turns are dangerous enough without a drivers' view obscured,
as you try to turn right into Chaiyapoom. And who ordered all this Kochasarn
sidewalk blocked (lower right)? Neither use nor ornament! Lastly, main
roads north carried more military convoys than you could shake a stick
at last month. By the time you read this I hope that they have all returned
to barracks, safe and sound. But, as per all topics above, I'm not holding
my breath.
